Reflection

I have spent a lot of time on my creature head and havent moved on to my individual project yet.  I am very happy with and proud of the detail in my creature, however.

Breakdown

January: Before the end of this month, I want to have the basic layout of my pieces, including a decided set of board sizes.  I will have the essential central image for each board and have the pattern of images and color around it decided.
February:  In February, I will create the base for the images to lay on.   I will do most of my photoshopping during this period.  By the end of the month, I plan on having all my photos edited and arranged.
March:  In March, i want to finish my illustration work on the tablet.  Once finished illustrating, I will be able to finish my photoshopping and print the graphics.

Proposal

I want this piece to represent grandeur.  From the Pantheon of Rome to the pyramids of Egypt to the Great Wall of China, I want it to show colossal feats of man.  When snowboarding, a person wants to 'go big.'  That is why i chose these images.  Accomplishments of epic proportions; a huge building... a cork 900.  I will focus on my use of color and lines in this piece, using vibrant contrasting colors without over-saturating.  I want my lines to create lots of movement in all directions, flowing the eye around the board and back to the central image, the focal point, the accomplishment of man.  Other images will appear throughout the board, much more subtle than the main image.  They will be shadowed, transparent, and will be relevant to the main photo in some way.  Using Illustrator, I plan on adding some of my own artwork to the piece.  Washy, tangled lines and color will create movement with a cartoon effect to lighten up the piece.  My goal is for people to see the boards I make and want to ride them.

Artist Analysis

This is the Outdoor Living snowboard by Capita; I was unable to find an artist for this piece.  At first glance, the piece seems simple:  Two skeletons dancing on a kaliedescope background.  However, There is another level of imagery to this piece.  When viewed closely, simple shapes made of thin lines can be seen. Hands, lightning bolts, and other subtle images appear.  The light-colored simple skeletons on the dark, complex, colorful background creates contrast and makes the skeleton images pop.  Movement is created through the positioning of the skeletons bodies; their arms, legs, and heads all imply action.  The true meaning of the artwork is vague.  The skulls of the skeletons have crosses etched into them, and what could presumably be the ‘hands of God’ appear in the background of thin subtle lines.  The mood is dark but not negative.  It creates a feeling as abstract as the images themselves.  This is how a snowboard graphic should be, creating a feeling of freedom.  I enjoy looking at this image because of all the subtle complexities.  I chose it because it reflects my ides of a central image surrounded by other images grafted myself.  The colors are intense, as I want mine to be, and there is much detail with subtle meanings. This is what I am going for.

Rough Idea

For my individual piece, I am going to make a series of snowboard graphics using a combination of photo editing and illustration with a tablet.  I want it to be severely abstract, with a theme of ancient civilizations such as Greece, Rome, China, Egypt, and Aztec.  Focusing on their most famous structures, I will create a swirl of color and motion through the piece using random or sci-fi based images.  I want it to be interesting to look at.  Something for me to remember through this piece is to stay away from immature imaging and abstractions.
